Decoding and Science of Reading

Let’s look more into the decodable word lists and how this addition can be beneficial to your students. Decodable texts like these words lists are a vital part to early reader success. Decodable text is able to be customized to incorporate sounds that students have learned. This allows them the opportunity to fully decode the words independently.

Decode

Ability to apply your knowledge of letter-sound relationships, including knowledge of letter patterns, to correctly pronounce written words.

Decodable texts are a crucial part to those implementing a science of reading approach. If you use my Guided Phonics + Beyond Curriculum you will be able to use these decodable word lists with 100% confidence in knowing that each list will be labeled with the corresponding lesson number. If your students have completed Guided Phonics + Beyond Unit 2 Lessons 1-5 you will be able to select those decodable word lists for them. The students will be able to decode (stretch out) each word. You might notice that the student needs to decode the word sound-by-sound. This is okay and completely normal. Decoding is hard work for students. With repeated practice their pace/fluency will increase.

Implementing the Decodable Word Lists

The decodable word lists can be implemented in multiple ways. Below I will share a few ideas. However, you will quickly discover that there are endless possibilities with these decodable word lists.

The decodable word lists make for an excellent and easy small-group warm up activity. The cards can be placed on a ring or left loose. Place a stack of word lists at your small-group table. As you dismiss for independent center time, students headed back to your table can grab a set of lists and start decoding. As they complete one list, they can turn to the next page or grab another loose decodable word list. This practice is both meaningful for their reading practice and impactful.

The decodable word lists also make for a great option to your independent literacy center baskets. You can choose from the color version or ink-saving black & white version for an independent literacy center. You might also choose to print the decodable word lists at a smaller scale (printing multiple pages to 1 sheet of paper) to save on ink and paper. Another option is to add in some novelty items to the literacy center basket to increase engagement. That could be items like plastic wands and google eye rings for tracking or a sand timer for encouraging fluency.

The decodable word lists are an excellent learning tool for your whole-group instruction. Keep the word lists near you during instruction. You can use the word lists to generate skill-based words for your lesson. For example, “On your whiteboard, write the word __.” or “Let’s map the word ___.” Having the word lists nearby will allow the opportunity to quickly reference back to make sure you are generating words within the scope.

Implementing the Decodable Word Lists (contd)

I’m all for taking learning on the go. These decodable word lists are perfect for this. For example, as students line up at the door, allow them to tap a word from your lists and decode it. You could also have them tap a word on their way into the restroom from your line. These would also be great as time-fillers or for transitions during the classroom day. “Listen to my word, c-a-t. Spell it back. What is the word?” or “Listen to this word, wish. Now you spell it for me.”

The decodable word lists are an excellent and simple way for students to practice their reading fluency at home. You can print the ink-saving black & white version for students to take home. Another option is to print the lists loose, place on a ring, or at smaller-scale to make prep quick. You can encourage students through teacher-parent communication to practice their word lists for a certain time each day, certain days, or just for enjoyment.

The decodable word lists are a great option for efficient decodable assessing. You can print the decodable lists and leave them loose for a “check-off” style of assessing. Another option is to allow students to “master” their decodable word lists. They can place a sticker or smile face next to each word as they master it.

Sticking to the Scope and Sequence

It will be important to follow the Guided Phonics + Beyond scope and sequency when using the decodable word lists. Thankfully I have made this super easy for you to do. Each card is clearly labeled with both the unit and corresponding lesson number. You will also see that the decodable word lists are color coded to match my Guided Phonics + Beyond Curriculum. If you are like me and not a fan of the traditional metal binder rings you might want to check out these awesome plastic spiral rings. They are also manageable for little hands in case you want students to slowly grow their ring by adding on a new word list themselves each lesson. You can view the spiral rings HERE.
