Renewing MA and MinnesotaCare eligibility
If you have Medical Assistance (MA) or MinnesotaCare, the Department of Human Services (DHS) must review your eligibility once a year to see whether you are still eligible. This process is called a renewal.
- If we can automatically renew MA for everyone in your household, we will send you a notice and an information summary. You must review the information summary to make sure all the information about you and your family is correct. You don't have to do anything else, unless you have a change or correction to report.
- If we cannot automatically renew MA for one or more people in your household, we will send a renewal form for you to complete, sign and return. You must return the form with needed proofs by the due date. When we get your completed renewal form, we will decide whether the people in your household who must renew MA eligibility remain eligible for health care coverage.
Note: During the pandemic, DHS suspended the asset limit for MA eligibility for some people. The asset limit starts again when we return to regular renewals in June 2024. More information.
See the DHS webpage for more information on automatic renewal.

What happens if I don’t return my renewal form?
Your health insurance coverage will end.
I think I might not qualify anymore. Do I still have to complete my renewal form?
Yes, if you want us to decide if you still qualify, or see if you are eligible for a different health insurance program.
Can I return my renewal form after the due date?
Yes. Complete and return your renewal form as soon as you can, even if your coverage ended. We will look at your case again if we get your renewal form within four months after your coverage closed. After that, you will need to reapply.
Can I upload my renewal form and proofs online?
Yes, see the upload documents page for more information.
When will my renewal form be processed?
- Renewal forms are processed in the order they are received at your county or tribal agency or at DHS.
- Your renewal will take longer if it is not complete or not signed. Answer all the questions and sign your renewal form to help us process it faster.
- DHS will notify you when your renewal form has been processed. We will send a notice if we need more information from you to decide your eligibility. We will send a notice to tell you whether your eligibility has been renewed.
If I have MinnesotaCare, what do I need to know about my MinnesotaCare premium during renewal time?
- Continue to pay the amount shown on your invoice. Your MinnesotaCare premium may change after your renewal form is processed.
- The premium notices you get in November and December may show a premium amount of “unknown” instead of a dollar amount. If you already returned your renewal form, this means that it hasn’t been processed or received or the agency is waiting for more information from you. If you have not returned your renewal form, you must return it by the due date or your eligibility will end December 31.
